Biography

He debuted on April 28, 2002 with his song “Rain”.

Rain spent most of his childhood living with his parents and younger sister, Jung Hanna, near Yonsei University.

Despite being an introverted and shy child, he was discovered to have a passion for dance when he performed in a talent show for high school. He initially had difficulty combining dance and academics so he received low grades during the beginning of high school due to his frequent dance practices. He decided to follow his passion and attended the School of the Arts where he received his first formal instruction in acting and where he was able to pursue dance as well.

Rain lost his mother while he was battling diabetes, who died in 2000. Within the same year, Rain was hired as an apprentice at JYP Entertainment, headed by recording artist and producer J.Y. Park (JYP). In an interview on CNN and also in a Discovery Channel documentary called Discovering Hip Korea he stated that despite his skills he was rejected on several occasions because of his appearance: “In fact, I was told after an audition that my singing and dancing was great, but I didn’t get it because I didn’t have a double eyelid. However, he finally made it when producer J.Y. Park saw his determination during an audition in which Rain danced for hours non-stop, as opposed to the usual ten minutes. During the first years of his training, he was a secondary dancer.

In 2003, he participated in a TV show on SBS network, called “Banjun Drama”, where he made his acting skills known. After that, he has done several TV dramas, such as “Sandong”, “Full House” (with a great success), “A Love to Kill” or “Fugitive”. He has received great awards both as a singer and actor, being recognized in Japan as one of the best.

In 2006, he held a concert at Madison Square Garden (New York), selling out in less than a day. It is said that Bi will make his official debut in the U.S. next year, but he will not leave Korea without releasing his fourth album.

in 2008 he is called to collaborate with a movie in Hollywood called “Speed Racer”. In the same year he changes his agency and creates his own under the name of J.Tune Entertainment. He also releases his 5th album titled “Rainism” and creates his own clothing brand called Six to Five.

In November 2009 his movie “Ninja Assassin” was released, in which he is the main actor. The movie was produced by the Wachowski sisters (creators of “The Matrix” saga) who saw in him potential after seeing the first sequence of the movie Speed Racer, in which he also stars.

He also personally chose the five members of his first K-Pop group (MBLAQ) and the group debuted on October 9, 2009.
