About Key

Key was born in Daegu, South Korea. Being an only child, he was raised by his grandmother from birth, as his mother was ill after giving birth and his father was busy with work.

In 2006, he joined SM Entertainment after winning the S.M. National Tour Audition Casting. Prior to making his debut, Key appeared as a background dancer in the movie Super Junior He is also known for his talent in several languages, including English and Japanese. He spent six weeks on an exchange in the U.S. and is fluent in English.

Start in SHINee

In 2008 he was chosen to make his debut as a member of the group SHINee he made his official debut on May 25, 2008 with the song “Replay”.

2012: Debut as a musical actor

In 2012, Key was cast as Frank Abagnale Jr. in the Korean production of the Broadway musical “Catch Me If You Can,” marking his theatrical debut. The musical ran from March 28 to June 10 at the Blue Square, Samsung Card Hall in Hannam-dong, Seoul. On October 24, 2012, it was announced that Key would participate in the return of the Korean adaptation of the Broadway musical “Catch Me If You Can.” The production began on December 14, 2012 and continued through February 9, 2013 at the Seongnam Arts Center.

On July 18, 2013, it was announced that Key would be cast as Clyde in the Korean production of the Broadway musical “Bonnie & Clyde.” The performance was presented at the Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul from September 4 to October 27, 2013. On October 22, he was cast in another Korean adaptation of the Broadway musical “The Three Musketeers” as D’Artagnan.

In 2014 he was cast in the lead role for the musical “Zorro,” sharing the role with Wheesung and Yo Seob from Highlight fox” was held from August 27 to October 26 at the Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul.

In July 2015, it was announced that Key would be part of the musical “In the Heights,” which was also performed with Japanese subtitles at the Kanagawa Arts Theatre in Yokohama in 2016. Key starred in his first stage play as Byeong Gu in “Save the Green Planet!” based on the 2003 film of the same name.

2014: Debut with ToHeart

On February 20, SM Entertainment released a video announcing “ToHeart”, which is a new collaboration between INFINITE’s Woo Hyun and Key. A second video was released on February 27 to announce its debut. ToHeart premiered its new music video on March 10 and made its first live performance on March 12 at MelOn Premier Showcase.

2016: Debut Actor

In September 2016, Key made his official acting debut in tvN drama Drinking Solo he took the role of a student who has been studying for the civil service exam for three years. His character has lived an easy life until now, but is currently living a life with no income. Although this was his first performance, he was well received by the production team, stating “Key is someone who works hard.He did a lot of preparation beforehand and as an actor, he thoroughly analyzed his character role.He is getting a lot of praise and love from the staff.Despite having no drama experience at the time of his audition, his performance gave off a very fresh vibe.Also, his acting and enunciation were good, so we decided to hire him.”.

In April 2017, Key was announced as one of the main characters in the new MBC drama, Lookout in the drama, Key plays the role of Gong Kyung Soo, a skateboarder and a hacker whose mother disappeared due to a crime and received positive reviews for his acting skills. He later received the Best New Actor Award for his role in the drama at the 2017 Grimae Awards.

2018: Debut as a solo artist with his First Studio Album “FACE”.

On October 11, industry representatives reported that the SHINee member is in the final stages of preparation for his solo debut. And in response, SM Entertainment confirmed “Key is preparing a solo album for November.”.

On October 30, it was announced that he would be releasing the song “Forever Yours” as a pre-release single on November 6 at 6 PM KST. It also features the collaboration of So You.

“Forever Yours” is an R&B song full of vibrant tropical house inspirations, the song talks about the exciting and romantic emotions that a couple who are deeply in love with each other feel.

His first studio album “FACE” the album contains a total of 10 songs; among them the previously released “Forever Yours” in collaboration with So You and, the theme song, “One of Those Night” in collaboration with Crush key also wrote lyrics for four songs “I Will Fight” , “Easy to Love” , “The Duty of Love” and “This Life..

The first is an R&B ballad about overcoming the hardships you face, while the second is about the difficulties you face. “Easy to Love” is an R&B track about what it’s like to be alone.

The pop song “The Duty of Love” playfully complains of a lover who does what he wants and the song “This Life” explores the meaning of “carpe diem” and “you only live once”..

“One of Those Nights” is an R&B track based on house rhythms in collaboration with Crush the song talks about calmly admitting that you are a weak person after breaking up with your partner.

Debut as a solo artist in Japan with his first mini-album “Hologram” and his first concert in “Key Land”.

“Hologram” was released on December 26. Prior to its official release, it was also made available digitally through various global music sites on December 21.

The album includes a total of five songs, with the title track being “Hologram” the song titled “Power” was helped to be written and composed by Tetsuya from The Arc~en~Ciel it also has the Japanese version of “One of Those Nights”.

On December 26, it reached No. 1 on Oricon’s daily album chart and according to Oricon, Key’s debut album in Japan sold 21,420 copies in a single day.

A live event called “Key Land” was held to celebrate his solo debut in Japan on December 22 at the World Memorial Hall in Kobe and on December 25 at the Yokohama Arena, for an audience of approximately 18,000 people.

2019: First solo concert “THE AGIT: KEY LAND – KEY”.

On 2-3 and 7-10, Key held his 6-day concert “THE AGIT: KEY LAND – KEY” at SMTOWN COEX Artium, showcasing his colorful performance and music, communicating with fans through fantastic performances full of style.

The demand for tickets led to an increase in the number of nights for the presentations, making it extend from February 2 to 3, from 7 to 10, and also from 16 to 17, with 11 concerts taking place over 8 days.

Participation in SM STATION with the Single “Cold”.

It was announced that Key would release the song “Cold” on February 14 at 6 PM KST, as part of the SM STATION project, in collaboration with rapper Hanhae and Key wrote the lyrics himself.

“Cold” in collaboration with Hanhae is an R&B song that features electronic piano sounds and vocal chorus. Key already explained that the song was good for winter listening and, in the lyrics, Key confesses the change in his feelings for the one he loves, saying, “I’m cold and I know it.”.

Back with the Repackaged Album “I Wanna Be”.

During his concert Key announced that he would be releasing a repackaged version of his first album, and performed his title track “I Wanna Be” at the concert.

On February 25, it was announced that the album repackaged “I Wanna Be” was released on March 4 at 6 PM KST. The album will contain 10 tracks from his album “FACE” as well as three new songs including the title track “I Wanna Be” in collaboration with So Yeon from (G)I-DLE and “Cold” which was released on February 14 as part of the third season of SM STATION.

“I Wanna Be” is a pop dance track with influences from the UK garage genre, in which Key collaborated with So Yeon from (G)I-DLE the lyrics express the honest feelings of someone who always wants to be by the side of the person he or he loves.

Military Service

SM Entertainment confirmed that Key had submitted an application to fulfill his mandatory military service by serving in the military band, and that if his application was accepted, he would enlist in March 2019.And, on Jan. 25, the agency officially announced that “Key from SHINee has been accepted into the military band and plans to enlist on March 4.”.

The discharge date was scheduled for Oct. 7, 2020. Key took his final military leave on Sept. 24, 2020, without returning to the military due to military protocols related to the COVID-19 pandemic, before being officially discharged on Oct. 7, 2020.

2021: Back with Pre-single “Hate That…”

On August 24 at 12 KST, it was announced that Key would be making his solo comeback with the pre-release single “Hate That…” with the collaboration of Tae Yeon will be released on August 30 at 6PM KST.

“Hate That…” is an R&B genre song with sophisticated rhythms and guitar melodies that conveys a melancholic feeling. The lyrics talk about wishing that an ex-lover is not having a hard time because of your breakup, but hoping that he or he remembers you in the best way.

Back with his first mini-album “Bad Love” and online solo concert “KEY: GROKS IN THE KEYLAND”.

On September 5 at 12PM KST, SHINee’s official Twitter revealed Key’s return as a solo artist with his first mini-album “Bad Love” which is scheduled to be released on September 27 at 6PM KST.

The mini-album “Bad Love” features six songs in total, including the title track “Bad Love” the album features the pre-release song, “Hate that…” in collaboration with Tae Yeon key also participated in writing the lyrics for the songs “Saturday Night” and “Eighteen”.

“Bad Love” is a pop dance song with a retro vibe and intense synth sounds. Kenzie participated in the production of the song and, whose lyrics, are about being broken by a nightmarish love that he can’t let go.

SM confirmed Key’s solo online concert, “Beyond LIVE – KEY: GROKS IN THE KEYLAND”, which takes place on September 26 at 3PM KST. Ticket sales began on Wednesday, September 1.
