About the Artist

Carrera and Red Velvet

In 2012, Joy auditioned at a casting call for the company’s SM Entertainment after being accepted and two years of training, she made her debut on August 1, 2014 as a member and rapper of the all-female group Red Velvet with the single Happines.

Solo activities

In mid-2015, Joy joined the fourth season of MBC’s reality show “We Got Married,” where she was paired with Sungjae from BTOB nicknamed the Bbyu couple; because of their sweet personality they managed to become the viewers’ favorite couple showing great support from both Red Velvet and BtoB fans. After achieving great popularity they jointly won the “MBC Entertainment Awards” for Best Couple; in turn at the same ceremony, Joy individually received the New Star award. During the show’s broadcast and Red Velvet’s promotions, Joy and Sungjae released a duet titled “Young Love” on April 16. The song managed to chart #1 on Olleh and Genie’s chart, #2 on Mnet and Bugs and #9 on Naver. Finally after 11 months Joy and Sungjae made their official exit from the show on May 7, 2016, becoming the youngest couple and one of the most popular couples of the show.

On November 4, SM released a duet of Joy together with Lim Seulong titled “Always In My Heart” as part of the SM Station project. The song ranked #2 on the Soribada, Genie, Bugs charts and finally #10 on the monthly chart of “Gaon Digital Chart”. In the same month, she joined the cast of TV network KBS2’s “Trick & True”.

In 2017, Joy made her acting debut by starring in the drama ‘The Liar and her Lover’ alongside Lee Hyun Woo. For the drama’s soundtrack, six songs performed by Joy were released, which were ‘Yeowooya’, ‘I’m Okay’, ‘Your Days’, ‘Shiny Boy’, ‘Waiting For You’ and ‘The Way To Me’. For her participation, she received the ‘Osean Tv Cable Awards’ Newcomer Award.

In July 2017, Joy appeared on ‘King of Mask Singer’ under the name Bandabi, competing in episodes 121 and 122. In the first round, she performed Sungjae’s song ‘Photograph’ and in the second round, former girl group S.E.S’s song ‘Just In Love’.

In January 2018, Joy joined the second season of JTBC’s variety program “Sugar Man” as a co-host and fixed panelist alongside Yoo Jae Suk, You Hee Yeol and Park Na Rae.

Soon after, Joy was confirmed to star in her second MBC drama “Temped” alongside actor Woo Do Hwan. At the same time because of filming the drama, Joy was unable to attend Red Velvet’s concert in North Korea which caused great debate as it was a great feat for a South Korean group to perform a concert in North Korea. Also for the soundtrack of the drama, Joy released the song titled “Nonsense” and for her role in this drama she was nominated at the “Seoul Drama Awards” for Popularity in the Drama Actress category.

In the midst of Sugar Man and Temped’s broadcasts, Korea’s corporate reputation institute ranked Joy #1 in the individual ranking of female group members in the months of March and May respectively.

In July 2018, Joy along with Sungjae, were confirmed as the new models of “Fitz Super Clear Beer.” Also in August 2018, she appeared on the cover of “Nylon Korea” magazine.

In September 2018, she was confirmed for Lifetime’s new variety show ‘Pajama Friends’ alongside Song Ji Hyo, Jang Yoon Ju and Cheng Xiao. The show aired from September 15 to December 8 having a total of 15 episodes.

The following month in October 2018, Joy released the song “Dream Me” alongside Mark from NCT for the soundtrack of the KBS drama “The Ghost Detective”.
