- One year after Turbo disbanded, Jong Kook became a solo artist in 2001, focusing mainly on ballads.
- In 2005, he became one of the most important artists in Korea; his album sales exceeded 300,000 copies, making it one of the best-selling albums of the year. Also in 2005, he won 3 of the possible 4 artist of the year awards, losing only one of the “gold” awards.
- On January 21, 2006, Jong Kook participated with other artists (Jeon Hye Bin and Tae Kyung Im) in a concert in Paris.
- To fulfill his two-year mandatory service obligation, he joined the army in 2006.
- He completed his military service in May 2008.

Biography
He joined the Korean music industry in 1995 (his debut under CJ’s music label) as part of the group Turbo which became popular in the years of activity, producing catchy and successful songs, such as “Twist King” which recently (June 2011) was sung as a duet by Kim Hyun Joong and Heo Young Saeng aside from being a 3-time Daesang Award-winning singer, he also actively participates in variety shows, such as X-Many Family Outing (since episode 19). He is also known for hosting a documentary program called Escape Crisis No.1 (also known as Safety First!). It was made known on December 13, 2016 his separation in the activities of the variety program, Running Manshortly after it was published that he spoke SBSwith Kim Joong Kook and his agency, so far they are still making chapters.
