Biography
In July 2014, Sungjae became a host of the program, A Song For You with Kang In from Super Junior and Amber from F (x) later that year, he was cast in Hitmaker as a member of the boy group of Hyundon and Defconn’s parody project Big Byung. The group released two singles “Stress Come On” and “Ojingeo Doenjang.” He received his first acting role in Plus Nine Boys, playing a 19-year-old Judo athlete. In late 2014, he became a cast in the reality-variety show Real Men and left in 2015.
Sungjae made a breakthrough when he landed a starring role in the teen drama Who Are You: School 2015 alongside Kim So-hyun and Nam Joo-hyuk. He also released an OST for the show Love Song with Park Hye-soo. After the series ended, he experienced a rise in popularity and landed 4 solo endorsements including the mobile app Cash Slide, the clothing brand Black Yak with Jo In-sung, Hazzy’s Accessories with co-star Kim So-hyun and a shopping website called G -Market.
In 2015, Sungjae joined King of Mask Singer, competing under the alias Tired Bumblebee, where he received good reviews.Sungjae then starred in the horror mystery series The Secret Of Achiara Villagethe same year, he paired up with Red Velvet’s Joy in the fourth season of reality show We Got Married. Departing from We Got Married on May 7, he became known as one of the longest-running and most popular couples in the show’s recent history. During the course of We Got Married, their videos together on YouTube accumulated more than 21.3 million views.
At the end of 2015, Sungjae received multiple awards.He received the “Best Couple” award with Red Velvet’s Joy and the “Best Male Newcomer (in Variety)” award for his appearance in We Got Married.He also received the “New Star” award for his performance on The Secret Of Achiara Villageand won the ‘Best Couple’ award with Kim So-hyun for Who Are You: School 2015.
In 2016, he appeared in Louie’s Geeks “On The Four Lane Road.” He also released a special duet song, “Young Love” with Joy, and contributed to the song’s lyrical composition. On May 20, he was named an ambassador of King Sejong Institution. In December, he released a Christmas single “Playing with Fire” with NC.A, whom he previously co-starred with Reply 1994.
From 2016 to 2017, Sungjae starred in the TV drama ‘Guardian: The Lonely and Great God’.
In November 2017, SBS announces its new variety program “Master in the house” or “All the butlers” with Lee Seung Gi, Lee Sang Yoon, Yook Sungjae and Yang Se Hyung, the program consists of: They will spend a night at famous figures’ houses to learn about their lives in hopes of gaining knowledge and wisdom.
To date, it is one of the highest rated variety programs since its broadcast, competing with the KBS variety program “2 Days & 1 Night” which airs on the same day and at the same time.
